Ten years on at the 9-11 7-11

[Written by guest blogger emeritus See-Dubya]

Hello—I go by See-Dubya on the web, and I used to guest-blog here for Michelle back in 2008. Then I retired from blogging, but I’m coming back just this once to tell you about my trip to 7-11.

It was actually only near 7-11; I didn’t go in. The parking lot was too crowded. It was raining and it was early in the morning and my windows were fogged up but I pulled in across the street, turned my headlights off, and one of the three or four dozen men who were hanging around the lot (despite the miserable downpour) came out to see me. One little guy in an orange shirt and a ball cap, who looked to be in charge, came up to my window, but I just smiled and waved him off and fooled with my phone. So he smiled and went back to leaning on his truck. I think he thought I wanted to pick up some day labor.

I wasn’t, but hat’s understandable: this particular 7-11 has a reputation as a place to pick up day labor. It has had that reputation for at least ten years, probably longer. Every time I’ve driven by there, there the laborers are. There’s a lot of places like this in America today, probably some of them 7-11s, where day laborers gather in hopes they’ll get picked up for a job.

This particular 7-11 (you can see the sign, and the workers, in the background, through the monsoon) is in Falls Church, Virginia, on the Leesburg Pike, just down the road from the Dar al-Hijrah mosque. Ten years ago, a charismatic imam named Anwar al-Awlaki manned the pulpit there, and a U.S. soldier named Nidal Hasan listened to his sermons in the congregation.

In fact just a little over ten years ago a couple of worshipers from Dar al-Hijrah drove up to this particular 7-11. They weren’t really interested in hiring the day laborers so much as getting someone to help them acquire forged identification. That turned out to be a fellow named Luis A. Martinez-Flores, himself an illegal immigrant, and he walked the two Arabs, Hani Hanjour and Khaled Almidhar, through the process of getting Virginia ID cards—after which they returned to this particular 7-11, withdrew $100 from the ATM, and handed it to Mr. Martinez-Flores.

Around five years ago Michelle went to this particular 7-11. She talked about what had happened there on her then-new website called Hot Air. Her video isn’t there anymore, but it made quite an impression on me. Now that I live in Northern Virginia, every time I drive past that particular 7-11 I point it out to my family. I don’t want them to forget why that particular 7-11 is special. That’s where Hani Hanjour and Khaled Almidhar ten years ago used the ID’s they bought so easily at this day labor bazaar to board American Airlines Flight 77 out of Dulles, and then to take it over and fly it into the Pentagon. They had also, according to Martinez-Lopez’s federal indictment, used these ID’s to procure ID’s in turn for three other 9/11 hijackers. “In all,” notes the 9-11 Commission report, “the five hijackers based their Virginia identification documents on the residency information of one bribed Salvadoran.”

You would think the first thing that the newly-formed Department Homeland Security would have done would be to raid this particular labor market, frequented by illegal aliens and the document fraudsters that enable them to feign legitimacy, and shut it down for good. This is the site of our immigration policy’s greatest, most shameful failure, after all. Of course, ten years on, it’s just business as usual and the shame and failure continue unabated. There’s no marker to commemorate what happened there. You’d never know anything historically significant had happened there ten years ago.

You’d have no indication at that particular 7-11 what a petty, commonplace, wretched little conspiracy was committed, and what a dreadful, monstrous crime was thereby abetted. That was where and when our self-deception about the illegal labor market and the security risks it presents caught up to us. Everyone should know this place. Everyone should vow that what happened there will never be permitted to happen again.

But everyone won’t know; the memory is fading. Like the pictures of the man jumping from the Twin Towers, like the pictures of the rejoicing Middle East, this is one story that you never see in the “respectable” media accounts of what happened a decade ago.

I just drove by there the other day to remind myself. And ten years later it looks like nothing has changed, especially not the policy permitting this market to occur. When Michelle made her video for Hot Air five years ago we were in the midst of debating President Bush’s new policy of amnesty for illegal immigrants, a policy which was just beginning to erode the support of his conservative base. And today the current President has just recently opened yet another door to illegal alien amnesty.

One more thing remained the same: Writing in Human Events about that particular 7-11 in November of 2001, Timothy Carney and Terence Jeffrey noted that Fairfax County police cars often stopped there in the mornings and kept an eye on the crowd. And sure enough, this week, right there in front of that particular 7-11, in the midst of the mob of day laborers (no doubt enjoying Fairfax County’s ongoing status as a “sanctuary city” for illegal immigrants,) there was parked a Fairfax County police cruiser, just waiting, watching the traffic. Hoping, perhaps, to find some illegal activity going on.

Keep watching! Another ten years, and you may start to see something.

  1. HIRING ILLEGAL ALIENS MUST COME TO AN END, OR FACE HARSH CONSEQUENCES!

A women from the Caribbean who procured a deceased child’s Social Security number, is just one of the hundreds of thousands that are stolen every year. Any private investigator or researcher can explain that obituaries can glean a new identity, by searching for young children who have recently died or were in an unfortunate accident or brought down by illness. A researcher can go to any rural newspaper, which publishes those deceased columns, near to their age and get the basic material to acquire the personal details of that individual and take on that identity. Annually the American people are finding their credit compromised by criminal illegal aliens or nefarious individuals.

There is a billion dollar business with the protection of Citizen or green card possessor, but even so hundreds of people have found their credit crippled or even the theft of the equity in their homes. The majority of illegal aliens make up their own number, but the criminal element or the temptation is already there to steal somebody’s person information. In 1999 I found myself in the same predicament, when I was at a car dealership, finding that my Social Security was being used by 3 other people. I contacted the Social Security telling them a person unknown to me, was employed at a San Antonio, Texas Security company using my name and SSN. That said, I never heard any word about the crime of any of these three people. Like so many other people, I informed the police, and then began the long road back to reviving my good credit.

This escalation of foreign nationals and other criminals stealing people’s identity, the federal government should assess issuing a mandatory official picture Identity card to every American. The cost would be a worthwhile causing to halt the theft of people’s personal details, even if it the final tally was a billion dollars to pay for it? This personal ID card could be used for voting (that has been badly compromised by the Liberals and Democrats that seem unconcerned of illegal aliens voting) Illegal immigration has effected every bodies life, including jobs, the economy of 113 billions of dollars hemorrhaging from both federal and state treasuries. In fact another Amnesty that both sides are pushing Congress for, would be 2.5 trillion dollars from your pockets in taxes.

IT IS TIME FOR AN OFFICIAL ID CARD, WHICH CAN BE CROSS-REFERENCED WITH OTHER ID SUCH AS A DRIVERS LICENSE, MILITARY, STATE OR EVEN A PASSPORT.

If you come to America unlawfully; it should be punished as a felony. This is absolutely ludicrous that foreigners can steal not only your credit, but the equity in your home as well. Even small businesses are not exempt from theft, finding ways to promote credit lines and then disappearing into the streets. No new laws to aid the US population will be enacted by the GOP establishment or any Liberal or Democratic politician. The TEA PARTY leadership will stand firm against the Rick Perry, Mitt Romney or any other Presidential precursor for the White House. Either man has a failing grade in stopping the invasion of illegal immigrants from across the globe. Perry specifically, as in his earlier speeches advised the Texas legislators to pass another amnesty as well as taxpayer paid tuition for the children of illegal aliens; another State Dream Act. Only Michele Bachmann has the highest grade on NumbersUSA website.

President Obama directed his job speech on repairing the infrastructure across America. Highways and bridges specifically! The Use of—MANDATORY—E-Verify would ensure most construction jobs went to Americans. Contractors and subcontractors have ruined the livelihood of hundreds of thousands of small businesses. They have been the worst offenders of replacing US citizens and legal residents, with underpaid foreign nationals. No jobs are sacred anymore, as cheaper labor has replace lower income Blacks, Hispanics and whites as anything from Janitors, plumbers to blue collar hire, especially in Unions. Many illegal aliens have graduated for light manufacturing, to working in middle management. THIS IS VERY WRONG AND MUST BE ENDED.

No business will be exempt from observing the immigration law of 1986, which will be punished by the full extent of the law. Amnesties will be a thing of the past and entry into the United States, will be with the permission of the people. Dream Acts or Sanctuary cities will be none existent under the elected government of the TEA PARTY. The 20 million plus living here through unlawful entrance will eventually be caught and deported.

As a second urgent point the Rep. Lamar Smith E-VERIFY BILL TO BE ‘ON THE TABLE’ IN JUDICIARY COMMITTEE THIS THURSDAY, PLEASE PHONE YOUR U.S. REPRESENTATIVE ON THE COMMITTEE. THERE ARE OVER 14 AMERICANS JOBLESS AND THE PUBLIC WHO BELIEVE THAT IT’S TIME TO EJECT ILLEGAL WORKERS FROM THE JOB MARKET.

It is finally happening! A mandatory E-Verify bill is moving through committee. We can see this into law THIS FALL — if we push hard enough. Go to NUMBERSUSA to phone and insist on this bill be passed.

Legislation is finally moving through committee (a) to mandate E-Verify nationally, (b) to take away the ability of illegal aliens to use stolen identities to steal American jobs, (c) and to begin opening up hundreds of thousands of construction, manufacturing and service jobs for unemployed Americans.

The “mark-up” (the process of considering amendments and voting out the bill) was announced to start Thursday morning.

Now is the time to pour every bit of activism you can give to helping Members of the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary understand why they must pass this bill.

    H.R. 2885
New Bill Number for Lamar Smith’s “Legal Workforce Act”

Since Rep. Smith (R-Texas) introduced this bill early in the year (as bill number H.R. 2164), he has gotten a lot of feedback and made enough changes to decide to re-introduce the bill under a different number.

INCLUDES A NEW PROVISION TO HELP STATE AND LOCAL ENFORCEMENT OF IMMIGRATION LAWS

All the basic elements that we’ve described in the past are still in the bill (despite huge efforts by powerful forces to water it down).

But this bill has a wonderful addition.

The bill creates an office within ICE Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), whose sole purpose is to respond to — and investigate — state and local governmental agency complaints about businesses hiring and/or employing illegal immigrants.

This new office is required to respond within five business days of the filing of the complaint.

Attorneys General, prosecutors and other state and local officials who believe they see a pattern of a business employing illegal aliens will have a direct line to ICE with a guarantee of rapid response. As these complaints will be a matter of public record, failure of ICE to obey the law will provide direct evidence for congressional hearings into Administration misfeasance.

Fortunately, another office of this type that has been operating as a complaint desk on another immigration matter has a reported high degree of compliance by the feds and satisfaction by state and local officials.

Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas) is the Chairman of the Judiciary Committee. Major forces have attempted to get him to keep postponing the moving of this bill. We had campaigned hard to get a vote in committee before the August recess. We are ecstatic that Chairman Smith has made this bill such a priority and are moving this so soon after Labor Day.
